Have More Questions About Destination Weddings In Mexico?

WE’VE GOT ANSWERS

FAQs

  • Hi. We're Misti & Colin, founders of Bohemia Weddings, one of the most established + most reputable wedding companies based in the Riviera Maya.

We've been living and working in the Mexico Destination Wedding Biz for over 10 years as a husband and wife team. We are originally from the US, but we live in the Riviera Maya of Mexico full-time and we know the resorts here like the back of our hand. We are feet on the ground and in the know.

We know that every venue has pros and cons, some resorts excel in some areas and may be not so good in others. We also know the ones to unequivocally stay away from, to save you from a ton of unnecessary wedding stress. We can give you realistic expectations on what to expect with each venue.

Whether you're looking for an all-inclusive resort, a high-end non all-inclusive, a boutique hotel in Sayulita, a beach club in the Riviera Maya, a venue in San Miguel de Allende, Cabo San Lucas or anywhere in-between; we've been traveling and doing weddings all over Mexico for over a decade and we're confident we can find you the perfect venue.

To put it simply: We help with venue research and selection, we facilitate your wedding bookings, room blocks, resort payments, due dates, group excursions and airport transportation +more - while giving you added perks where we can!

  • To start, we send you our Venue Research Form

When we receive the questionnaire answers back, we will schedule a call to go over your answers.

We can go over the details of what you’re looking for in a venue, any obstacles you’re facing; and we can get a better idea of your overall ‘vibe’.

After that, we’ll present you with some different venue ideas that we think could suit your needs.

  • Answer: Yes.

We help people book smaller or private venues all the time! They are a popular option for weddings here, as you get a private space to yourselves without vendor fees.

We could still facilitate our normal hotel venue bookings and room blocks for you and your guests at nearby resorts or hotels to the small wedding venue you have chosen - with no added charges from us.

  • After a free consultation and before the wedding booking process we require a one time $500 USD retainer fee as a commitment to our service. After that you officially have an expert agency managing the destination wedding booking process for you and your guests.

The benefit of using us is that we have close relationships with the resorts and wedding managers and we are able to bring you the added perks and benefits that a website like Expedia can’t offer you. Plus, we are locals and know most of these resorts inside and out.

Also many resorts will not permit you to book a room block on your own without an agent license, like we have.

We also have tons of experience in working with these resorts at weddings, and we’ve seen the front and back end of these operations. We can tell you which places have terrible reputations for weddings… and which resorts create beautiful, seamless, stress-free wedding days.

We often are able to get the lowest prices available for room blocks, that are usually 20% lower than rates that are published for the retail public.

  • Once you've decided on a venue, it's time to start working with that venue/resort. We will reach out on to that resort/venue via email to introduce you and check on their open wedding dates and times, and the deposit required to reserve your date, and any additional information needed. Though we are not attorneys, we are available to help you review resort/venue contracts that we are familiar with.

  • After finding out if your wedding date is available, we will reach out to room block suppliers to get room quotes for your wedding week.

If you like the room block quotes, we will go back to the wedding department and first secure your wedding date (most importantly!)

Once the wedding date is secured via contract and deposit, you’ll secure your room block via contract and deposit!

*Please note that most resorts require at least 10 rooms in your room block. If you dip below 10 rooms (if guests cancel or not enough guests book), your room block would be canceled and you would lose your deposit.

  • Where do we start? Not only do you get our extensive knowledge of the wedding industry here, but we've also negotiated deals with some resorts that we can bring to you like:

    • Free or Discounted Airport to Hotel Transfers For You & Your Guests

    • Free VIP airport transfers for the bride and groom!

    • Room Upgrades

    • Lower Room Rate Prices

    • Early Check-In and/or Late Check-Out.

    • Free nights and upgraded rooms.

    • A free wedding website with all your wedding venue information for guests.

    • An easy payment system for guests attending your wedding.

    • Our knowledge of the best and most trusted vendors in the area.

    • Our knowledge of vendor fees for outside vendors at different venues.

    • We also have access to the wedding booking calendars at some resorts, and can tell you what dates are open a lot quicker than the hotel's wedding coordinator can.

    • Personal relationships with resort management that expedites the booking process.

    • +More!

  • We do not book flights for you and your your guests and that will be up to them how and when they fly to your wedding event. We’ve found that wedding guests overwhelmingly prefer to choose their flight times, layovers, prices, credit card mileage, etc themselves.

  • No. We help you find your venue, your dates, coordinate airport transportation for you and your guests, and facilitate your venue/room block bookings.

After your venue is booked, you will likely be working with that venue's onsite wedding coordinator to go over details like decor, reception food options, etc.

If you want to book a coordinator that is an "outside vendor" aka: 'not an employee of that venue', we have a list of great coordinators that we know and trust all over Mexico.

  • Yes! If you would like to transition to a different venue in Mexico nearby your wedding venue or a different city/area entirely, we can make that seamless travel transition for you after your wedding.

There are so many cool and unique places to travel to in Mexico, that maybe wasn't a great fit for your wedding- but is the perfect fit for a solo trip as newlyweds.

  • Yes!

We have a list of excursions partners that we work with and recommend like Xcaret theme parks, Catamaran Sailing, Golf Outings and even a Private Cenote.

We can chat with you about what you’re interested in, and we’ll get that booking made for you and your guests.

  • Luckily, the Riviera Maya and Mexico in general, do not experience a lot of major hurricanes- that doesn’t mean however that it can’t happen.

We feel that it’s important (especially after the pandemic) to encourage the purchase of trip protection. Of course, this is optional and we can provide you with the trip protection insurance companies that we use ourselves.

  • We’re glad you asked!

We are accredited by IATA and ARC, both industry standards that allow agents to facilitate travel bookings from anywhere to anywhere. We are members of Travel Quest Network, a consortium of Travel Leaders. We are also AMR Master Agents, and have certifications from Funjet Weddings and ALGVPro. We are also proud members of DWHSA (Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Association) and we have been WeddingWire’s Couple’s Choice Winners for the past 6 years in a row.

  • Answer: Yes.

However, most people do a “Symbolic Ceremony” here for their destination wedding in Mexico and get legally married before or after the trip in their home country. With a symbolic ceremony, you can have any of your friends or family act as a minister to perform your ceremony if you’d like.

You do have the option of getting “Legally Married” in Mexico, but that requires a blood test (a chest x-ray in some Mexican states), 4 witnesses, and a minister legally accredited in Mexico to perform the ceremony. You and your 4 witnesses also have to arrive at least 4 days before your wedding day.

  • Of course, it depends.

Most of the quotes you’re seeing online when you search this, are only giving you a quote for the resort’s basic wedding package up to 20-30 people.

To be more realistic, once you’ve booked your room, your resort wedding packages, your decor, your photography & videography, your florals and hair and make-up, etc. - you’re looking at a minimum cost closer to $20,000 (for an average 50 wedding guests) for your resort destination wedding in Mexico. Of course, this depends on the venue/resorts, the amount of guests you have and the vendors or extras you choose.

For places in central Mexico (San Miguel, Oaxaca, Morelia, etc.), you can find amazing venues for a fraction of the cost of high-tourism cities.

The high-tourism cities of the Mexico coasts are not cheap, so do not expect to spend 10,000usd or less, unless you are having less than 20 guests.

Room rates are also increasing! Resorts on all Mexico coasts cost more than they used to, especially for 2025/2026 pricing.

Our advice? Plan and budget well ahead of time to give guests time to save.

  • No, unfortunately we cannot guarantee rates or price matching from what you may see as a temporary promo online.

We can always ask for you, but resort pricing and policies are ultimately up to the resorts. Typically travel agency group rates are the lowest to be found.

  • Yes! We can request site visits for you if you want to see your venue before your wedding, or visit a few venues before you book - BUT we need at least 2 weeks notice to get those site visits scheduled for you, and they’re not guaranteed if the staff are booked up. Also, site visits are only scheduled Monday-Thursday.

Please note that in Mexico, you cannot show up to a resort unannounced and ask to look around. You have to be pre-approved and on the security gate’s entry list for that day to enter the property.
